Economy experts share insights during Economic Forecast Seminar 2022

Discover experts' insights on 2022 global and Korean economic trends, shared during FKCCI Economic Forecast Seminar.

On May 12th, 2022, the French Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry held its annual Economic Forecast Seminar at Mondrian Seoul Itaewon hotel, with the kind support of its sponsor Invest Seoul. The event, which gathered close to 70 guests, started with opening speeches from FKCCI Chairman Mr. David-Pierre Jalicon, and H.E. Mr. Philippe Lefort, Ambassador to Korea.

Three experts then took the floor to share their insights on the macroeconomic situation and the post-crisis outlook in global markets and in the domestic Korean economy. Ms. Adeline-Lise Khov, Economic Counsellor & Head of the Economic Department at the Embassy of France to Korea, started by analyzing Korean Economic Perspectives for 2022. She was followed by Mr. Hyoung Tae Kim, Chief Economist at Kim & Chang, who explained the impact of global economy’s recent dynamics on future directions of the Korean economy and industries. Last but not least, Mr. Si Joon Kim, Head of Korea Trading at Credit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank, discussed opportunities and challenges for Korea’s new leadership.

Ms. Adeline-Lise Khov underlined “how fast Korea recovered from the crisis and how resilient it is”, an observation that the two other speakers corroborated. Although the country and its recently elected president Yoon Seok-yeol are currently faced with many challenges – Korea’s negative trade balance in the first quarter of 2022, a low birth rate, impacts of the Ukrainian war and lockdowns in China on supply chains, etc. –, all experts remained optimistic about the peninsula’s future, including its relations with France. Mr. Hyoung Tae Kim suggested “partnerships between the two countries in the fields of military and aerospace, nuclear plants, luxury goods and retail, and bio and health, are particularly promising”.

To conclude these economic forecasts, Ms. Adeline-Lise Khov, Mr. Hyoung Tae Kim, and Mr. Si Joon Kim gathered on the stage to answer guests’ questions during an enlightening Q&A session. It was followed by an insightful presentation of our sponsor Invest Seoul by its Director, Mr. Bonhi Gu, who introduced the sectors most worth investing in in Seoul.

Finally, guests had the opportunity to network with each other while savoring a business luncheon.
