VivaTech 2023: South Korea to be the Country of the Year of the biggest French Startup and Tech Event!

The European biggest Startup and Tech Event Vivatech is back in June with South Korea as the country of the year!

From June 14th to 17th, The French Vivatech exhibition welcoming 2,500 exhibitors from more than 146 countries has chosen South Korea to be the country of honor of the 2023’s edition. This special status will enable South Korea to send a delegation of around thirty Korean startups in France to join the event. Gathered in the K-Startup hall, these startups will be joining conferences, various programs and pitch their new projects and products to the French and European audiences. Many FKCCI members will also join the event, including Air Liquide, Asiance, CA CIB, L'Oréal, Mazars and Renault.

With a dynamic tech industry estimated at more than 39 billion of dollars and with more than 100,000 startups according to the MSS in January 2023, South Korea is renowned to be a major actor in the technology and innovation industries worldwide. Ranked n°1 by the Bloomberg Innovation Index and counting 2 of the Top 5 applicants for European patents in 2022 (LG and Samsung), the peninsula particularly excels in high tech fields such as AI, and Biotech.

As for France, already a major stakeholder in the world’s startup ecosystem, the country counts no less than 1 million of startups, among them 26 unicorns. The number of European patents filed is also continuously growing in France with a total of 10900 patents filed in 2022, a year-increase of 1,9%, reinforcing its position as one of the leaders in the innovation market worldwide.

The French-Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry is also evolving with this market ecosystem change as it counts every year more startups and SMEs among its members. Since the settlement of the French Tech Community in Seoul, the FKCCI has become an inescapable tech partner and has participated to numerous innovative initiatives. In the past, FT Seoul and FKCCI have cooperated extensively in the framework of the French Tech Community Fund to organize the Tech4Good Tour 2022 and Summit in 2021 and 2019. Additionally in 2023, in order to reinforce the French startup ecosystem in Korea, the Chamber has signed a MoU with the FT Community Seoul in presence of Jean-Noël Barrot, French minister for Digital transition and Telecommunications.

According to Phillipe Li, lawyer and former chairman of the FKCCI, who will be joining the exhibition, “Choosing South Korea as the country of the year is a great opportunity for Korean startups to reinforce their connections with the French and European tech actors as well as gain visibility at a worldwide level.”.

"This recognition of Korea by VivaTech testifies the strong bond that unites our two countries and the growth of the Korean startup ecosystem, which is now home to 22 unicorns," said Etienne Gautheron and Nicolas Mercier, co-presidents of the French Tech Seoul community.

An important thing to note is that Vivatech is not only open to the tech industries startups, leaders and investors but also to the main public on June 17th to enable anyone learn more about future innovations and tech jobs.

Thus, save the date and register to join the biggest tech event of the year!
