Michelin signs an MoU with Hyundai Group to develop premium EV tires
On June 17th, Michelin renewed its 5-year partnership with Hyundai Group to work on EV-related tire technologies.
The rise of environmental concerns calls for the deployment of new, more eco-friendly solutions. In this context, Michelin and Hyundai Motor Group signed on June 17th, 2022, a 3-year-long MoU to collaborate on R&D and develop a new generation of tires optimized for premium electric vehicles.
This is not the first time the two companies work hand in hand: for the past five years, they have been partners in creating an exclusive tire for EV model IONIQ 5, and carrying out experiments and analysis methods related to tires as well as technology exchange. This shared experience should prove useful as this collaboration is prolonged. "By fully leveraging our mobility technology and Michelin’s tire expertise, we are confident in our ability to achieve ground-breaking innovations in tire performance enhancement and create synergies in this organic collaboration", said Bong-soo Kim, Vice President and Head of Chassis Development Center at Hyundai.
Technologies expected to be developed by Michelin and its partner notably include: eco-friendly tires with increased use of eco-friendly materials; tires optimized for next-generation EVs; and a real-time tire monitoring system which will help advance autonomous driving technology. They should all find their way onto future premium Hyunday EV models, and will be of prime importance in meeting the durability requirements of tires, as well as driving performance and electric efficiency under high load as the driving range of EVs continues to increase.
