  • More than 200 Representatives of Foreign and Korean Business Communities participated

The French-Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI), and the Korean-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KGCCI) co-organized the Special Meeting with Presidential Candidate, Mr. Lee Jae-Myung on March 1, 2022 at Conrad Seoul. The event aimed at hearing Mr. LEE’s view on global trade and investment, which have an impact on the foreign business community in Korea, and on challenges regarding economic and social policy, green growth, and innovation in the post-Covid era. The meeting was moderated by Mr. Alex JENSEN, journalist and broadcaster, and it was largely covered in local media.

In his keynote speech, Mr. Lee Jae-Myung pointed out: “The biggest mission for Korea’s next president is to turn the crisis into an opportunity and revitalize the economy. Despite the Covid-19, foreign investment has recorded more than USD 20 billion for the past five consecutive years. Last year, it reached a record of USD 29.5 billion and it is expected to surpass USD 30 billion this year. Foreign investment is contributing tremendously to Korea’s economic growth and job creation.” Mr. Lee responded not only FKCCI and KGCCI but other European chambers of commerce and business leaders’ request by proposing his 10 New Economic Strategies, which will be springboard to fostering digital transformation with the largest investment in Korean history to science and technology area, to expand foreign investment.

The meeting started with welcoming messages from Ms. Hyun-Nam PARK, Chairperson at KGCCI, Mr. David-Pierre JALICON, Chairman at FKCCI, followed by the keynote speech of Mr. Lee Jae-Myung, candidate in the 2022 South Korean presidential election, nominee of the ruling Democratic Party. More than 200 representatives of foreign and Korean companies participated in the meeting.

During the welcoming message, Mr. David-Pierre JALICON said, “In the name of our 430 members at the FKCCI, but as well in the name of all the European Companies present in this room, we sincerely thank you for having accepted to exchange with us today. France’s economy, today, is redeveloped around 3 pillars Digital, Green, and Healthcare, which could offer promising partnership in between our two countries because Korea is one of the most promising and strong IT powerhouse in the global market. But there are still issues that we are facing regarding market access, trade or simply doing business in Korea.”

Ms. Hyun-Nam PARK pointed out, “The German-Korean trade had grown to USD 33 billion last year. As a survey conducted by the German, French and 9 other Chambers and Business Councils from Europe clearly showed, being active in the Korean market has become more important for 62% of the companies. This is not only for exporting to Korea; the significance also stems from collaborating with Korean companies to jointly go into third countries. Looking forward, we are convinced that much can be done in the coming years to strengthen business cooperation and links.”
