EDF Renewables Completes the Acquisition of a Large-Scale Offshore Wind Project Under Development in South Korea
September 3, 2024 – Korea, – EDF Renewables – a subsidiary of EDF, the world’s first low-carbon energy producer – announced today that it has acquired 100% of Shell Overseas Holdings Ltd.’s shares in West Sea Energy 1 Co., Ltd., which is exploring the development of a large-scale offshore wind project in South Korea. It marks a major step for EDF Renewables as it seeks to increase its offshore wind presence in South Korea and the Asia-Pacific region.
EDF Renewables acquires its first offshore wind project in South Korea, located in the southwestern county of Yeonggwang. Wind measurements have already been conducted across three identified zones. Following this acquisition, the company will continue to develop the project, which has an estimated capacity of up to 1.5 GW. Its next major milestone is obtaining an electricity business license by 2025.
EDF Renewables is continuously expanding its local team having started building its presence in South Korea two years ago. This acquisition is a significant step for the company in South Korea, in line with its strategy to increase its offshore wind presence in Asia Pacific, and especially in South Korea.
