Airbus and South Korea eye joint efforts in fighter jet and satellite development
The South Korean Ministry of Industry revealed that it held discussions with Airbus Defense and Space to explore avenues for enhancing collaboration in the development of next-generation fighter aircraft and other cutting-edge technologies.
Jang Young-jin, the First Vice Industry Minister, engaged in talks with Airbus DS CEO Michael Schoellhorn in Seoul, where they exchanged ideas about the potential establishment of a R&D center by Airbus in South Korea.
These discussions come following the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy's proposal in November, suggesting the creation of the Airbus Korea International Technology Center (AKITC) in South Korea to facilitate joint efforts in the fields of next-generation aviation, defense, and space technologies. Subsequently, both parties have been engaged in working-level negotiations concerning this proposal.
The Ministry stated that South Korean engineers and companies could participate in projects conducted by the AKITC, focusing on the development of sixth-generation fighter aircraft, transport aircraft, and essential technologies for the burgeoning urban air mobility sector.
Furthermore, during their discussions, Airbus and South Korean officials explored potential collaborations in the development of a low-orbit small satellite designed for space internet systems.
Mr. Jang emphasized South Korea's competitiveness in terms of technology, human resources, and infrastructure, particularly in areas like semiconductors, software, batteries, and advanced industries. He expressed optimism that the establishment of a research center by Airbus in South Korea would mutually benefit both parties, contributing to advancements in industry and security.
